Finding the perfect gift can be a difficult task since many people don't know how to properly choose a gift.
When you choose a gift for someone, you need to find something that the receiver will be happy with and will appreciate.
Many of us usually put a lot of effort when looking for great and perfect gifts for our loved ones. Even so, we don’t always make the best decisions.
We often start by doing some kind of research that aims toward gathering information on what kind of gift will best suit them.
Many times, we find ourselves lost in trivial things like what brand to choose, what price, shape, color, model, type, etc.
The best gifts in the world are not in the material objects one can buy from the store but in the memories we make with the people we love.
The truth is that when it comes to picking a present, especially for someone we care for, oftentimes, we lose the notion of time, and sometimes we even overspend our money.
We want to find the perfect gift and we want to make a good impression. After all, that's the purpose of offering a gift.
Further in this article, we will tackle the burning question that everyone asks during the holidays or any special occasion when we need to find a gift: “what makes a great gift?“
Is it the price, color, size, model, message, or just the gift-giving act that really matters?
To fully understand the secrets behind finding the best gift, I think we should go back to the roots of this act and understand the meaning of gift-giving.
People have exchanged gifts in various shapes since ancient times.
Even in primitive cultures, the giving of gifts was fairly common as it was distinguished as a sign of showing affection towards one another, for improving the relationships with other individuals, or as a sign of gratitude.
Gifts are not only things that people may need or want but are also those feelings they cannot buy.
By giving gifts, we show our gratitude, appreciation, and the fact that we care for someone.
The gift-giving act shouldn’t be complicated, but choosing a great gift also involves a bit of psychology.
It is always good to think about what message you want to deliver as you give a particular gift. It is also always beneficial to keep in mind that different people respond differently when they receive certain gifts.
For instance, you might give someone a funny gift for his or her birthday. Even though you might think that the chosen gift is hilarious, it might not make the receiver share the same feelings. In the worst case, he might even make him feel bad or ashamed by your present.
That’s clearly not your goal.
Knowing the receiver very well would also help you in choosing the best gift.
A person which is usually more emotional will usually respond better to a gift that has a deeper meaning, than to an expensive gift or something that’s trending. At the same time, someone who’s known as a materialist will definitely put more emphasis on the price of the gift or its brand.
Remember that a great gift is not always about buying expensive physical objects. Giving gifts is also a way of communication.
When you buy a gift and the receiver accepts it, it’s just like a symbol that the person confirms understanding the message. In some cases, we focus on the gift itself and only afterward we look at what message it delivers.
When you realize that gifts are a mechanism of expression, whenever you receive one from someone, you should know that this act has a deeper meaning than it conveys.
Some of the gifts communicate about the distance while others are more about intimacy and more profound feelings. Some may be a sign of insult, while some may be a symbol of deep gratitude.
Gifts in most cases are not attached to their prices and brands. Many of the gifts that show appreciation and love tend to be perceived as much more valuable by the receiver. These gifts usually create a high level of attachment regardless of how small or big they are and no matter how expensive or cheap.
If you consider all the above points, you should be able already to find the perfect gift for someone. Even so, there are some common characteristics that excellent gifts usually have.
Oftentimes, people think that things in trends make good gifts. Even though that might be right in some circumstances, that’s not always the case.
Many persons will prefer unique gifts and not something that everyone has and which can be found at every corner store.
Chances are that if you decide to go for a physical product that’s trending, the receiver might own that item already or someone else has offered him or her that gift already.
Perfect gifts have that element of uniqueness. That feeling of rareness is something that makes them valuable.
A good example of unique gifts are personalized items. There are many services and stores where you can order personalized gifts where you can print a photo, or engrave someone’s name on a necklace, bracelet, or on another product.
If you have a close relationship with the receiver of the gift, you can also order an item with a photo of you and him as a symbol of the connection between you and that person.
What I also consider to be a very important characteristic of a great gift is its life span.
I gave the trending gifts as an example above when I spoke about the uniqueness of the gift.
What you need to consider is that trends will usually go away and what’s trending today, might not be in trends tomorrow. It’s just like fashion.
A good gift should pass the test of time and the best gifts are usually timeless. These may range from old-fashioned to the most up-to-date products that are always popular.
A good example of timeless gifts are the gifts that emphasis more on sending a message to the receiver. For instance, t-shirts, necklaces, mugs, etc., or any product that delivers a clear and emotional message to the person that receives the gift.
I’m sure that the person you offer the gift to will always think about you every time he sees and use that product.
Despite the gifts that can be consumed, the gift must add value somehow to the recipient.
There are many gifts that might make a quick first impression the moment you offer them or squeeze a smile, but after that, they become completely useless.
A good gift is something that quickly finds a purpose in the recipient’s life. If it is something which its only role is to occupy a space in a dark closet and collect dust, then that is a perfect example of a useless gift.
Therefore, try to choose a gift that the recipient will enjoy, which will use, wear, or which he will gladly showcase in “a place of honor.”
A thoughtful gift is always appreciated because it’s usually something that someone needs.
For example, a new laptop would be the perfect present for a new student since it’s something that is of great value during school life.
The more you know the recipients and their needs, the easier it will be for you to choose the best thoughtful gift. However, that’s not always possible.
You might want to offer a gift to a new coworker, a new teacher, a new neighbor, or someone you don’t know very well. In that case, it’s better to go for a gift that appeals to a more general category but still meets one or more features listed in this article.
Meaningful gifts can never go wrong.
Gifts are usually attached to unforgettable moments, life stages, initiations, occasions, and other events. Giving gifts reminds the receiver of deeper meaning and strengthens human connections.
A meaningful gift is something that creates some sort of sensation. This feeling doesn’t have to be necessarily affection, but can also be something which provokes smiles, reminds two persons of their friendship, triggers memories, or anything that creates some kind of emotion to the receiver.
If you can’t think about something that would be meaningful for the recipient, I can recommend you again to go for a personalized gift. More exactly, the gifts that include a text message.
For example, for your wife’s birthday, you can offer her a necklace with a simple message like “To my wife – Never forget that I love you – Your husband.”
I’m sure you’re going to melt anyone’s heart with such a meaningful present.
Another thing you can look for when it comes to choosing a great gift is its ability to surprise.
If possible, it is preferable for a gift to have an element of surprise in addition to the initial excitement that will provoke.
Most of the time, you can surprise someone when you know what he or she wishes as a gift and you buy exactly that.
Gifts can also surprise the recipients by their nature, size, timing, and many other factors.
Choosing a gift is apparently an easy task. However, if you really want to get the perfect gift, there are several things to consider and features your gift needs to resemble.
Obviously, the easiest way to choose a gift that someone will like for sure is to ask the receiver what he wishes. However, that is not always possible and that way, you will spoil the surprise factor of the gift-giving act.
If you don’t know what the recipient wants or needs, I would recommend you to find a gift that matches one or more features presented in this article.
I hope that my guide for choosing the perfect gift will help you the next time you have to buy a gift for someone.
